Did Einstein actually fail math in school?

No. Einstein never failed math — this is a well-documented myth. His 1896 Swiss Matura certificate shows perfect 6/6 scores in algebra, geometry, and physics, and he had mastered calculus before age 15.

The claim that Albert Einstein failed math is one of the most persistent myths in popular history. His actual school records tell a completely different story: Einstein earned top marks in mathematics throughout his education and was described as "far above the school requirements" in math during primary school. By his own account, he had mastered differential and integral calculus before the age of 15.

The best surviving evidence is Einstein's 1896 Swiss Matura certificate, documented by Rare Historical Photos, which shows he received a perfect grade of 6 out of 6 in algebra, geometry, and physics — the highest possible score on the Swiss scale. West Texas A&M University's fact-check states plainly: "There is no record of Einstein flunking or ever getting low marks in math. The statement that Einstein was a poor student is pure myth."

The myth likely has two origins. First, a 1935 Ripley's Believe It or Not! column spread the false claim. Second, Einstein did fail the entrance exam for the Zurich Polytechnic — but his weak scores were in non-science subjects like French, not mathematics. A separate source of confusion is the Swiss grading scale itself, which runs 1–6 with 6 being the best; some accounts misread low numbers as poor performance when they actually indicate near-perfect marks.
