This study presents new evidence confirming that human personality is related to individual facial appearance. We present new findings demonstrating the statistically significant prediction of a wider set of personality features (all the Big Five personality traits) for both men and women using real-life static facial images. Even though the associations between isolated facial features and personality characteristics sought by ancient physiognomists have emerged to be weak, contradictory or even non-existent, the holistic approach to understanding the face-personality links appears to be more promising.
We investigated the accuracy of face-based personality impressions using a large set of faces (N = 1,000) and personality self-ratings (N = 2,000) across two samples and four traits (extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness). Our findings consistently suggest that people show neither accuracy nor meta-accuracy when forming face-based personality impressions. Personality impressions from faces do not reflect targets’ actual personality (i.e., we find no evidence for accuracy). We find that personality impressions from faces are not accurate.
While these judgments are prevalent, spontaneous, and impactful, they often lack accuracy. Research has shown that people can make above-chance level inferences regarding traits like extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, self-esteem, and even sexual orientation based solely on appearances. However, the correlations between external evaluations and self-reported personality traits remain modest, which constrains the practical applicability of these assessments. In conclusion, individuals often make rapid judgments regarding others' character, abilities, preferences, social implications, and even humanity based on facial appearances. However, the accuracy of these judgments is limited, and people tend to overestimate their ability to make such assessments.
However, direct evidence of association between facial shapes and personality is missing from the current literature. As shown in Fig. 1c, we found that the 3D facial shapes were significantly associated with personality trait A (Agreeableness; Pearson’s correlation ρ = 0.233, permutation test p < 0.001) for males. Overall, our results suggest that among the Han Chinese, a male’s personality is more apparent on his face than a female’s is on hers, and this is supported by both CPLSC and PCA methods.
Using faces with neutral expressions, it is demonstrated that personality information conveyed in faces changes the interpretation of verbal information. Moreover, it is shown that physiognomic information has a consistent effect on decisions, and creates overconfidence in judgments.
Both meta-analyses revealed significant, modest accuracy (face level, r = .14; perceiver level, r = .27) in facial trustworthiness impressions. Perceiver-level effects depended on domain, with aggressiveness and sexual unfaithfulness having stronger effects than agreeableness, criminality, financial reciprocity, and honesty. These results indicate that judgments of facial trustworthiness show a small but reliable kernel of truth, rather than being entirely physiognomic stereotypes.
These studies have found that there might be a "kernel of truth" to the validity of facial judgments of the Big Five, with above-chance agreement found especially for judgments of extraversion, and often also for agreeableness and neuroticism. In Study 1, we found that participants could consistently form impressions of the Big Five personality traits from a large set of naturalistic face photographs, such as the kind of photographs that can be viewed while browsing online. However, the accuracy of these impressions relative to targets’ self-reported personality was generally modest, consistent with the idea that face-based personality judgments contain some valid information but are far from perfectly accurate.
Our findings suggest that face-based personality impressions are not accurate, that perceivers lack insight into their (in)accuracy, and that most people overestimate their accuracy. Using larger samples of perceivers and targets than most previous studies, we found no significant associations between personality judgments based on a facial photograph and self-reported personality scores of targets. Bayesian analyses yielded strong support in favor of the null hypothesis, suggesting that, in our data, facial appearance explained virtually none of the variance in actual personality traits, despite people’s confidence in their judgments.
Recent studies suggest that facial characteristics influence perceptions of personality and may, in fact, be reliable indicators of actual personality-driven behavior. Many studies have now shown that perceptions of personality drawn from single face images, short videotapes, or very brief personal encounters align with the target’s self-reported personality. Despite this, the average effect size in the meta-analysis of accuracy in categorizing perceptually ambiguous groups was significantly larger (r = 0.26) than recent estimates of the average effect size of studies across social and personality psychology in general (r = .21).
There is increasing evidence for association between relatively neutral, static facial appearance and personality traits. After controlling for such cues, participants were able to identify Agreeableness, Neuroticism, and Physical Health from faces at above-chance accuracy. For personality traits, we found a reliable laterality bias, in that the right side of the face afforded higher accuracy than the left, and that the separate contributions of shape and texture cues varied with the traits being judged.
A growing body of research shows that independent observers commonly agree on a person’s personality traits based solely on an image of their face. In our study, prototypical high agreeableness faces were identified with higher accuracy (59.4%) compared to low agreeableness faces (42.7%). All accuracies > 50% (low extraversion, high agreeableness, and low neuroticism faces) significantly surpassed chance level, indicating more correct than incorrect classification for these faces. These findings suggest that certain prototypical facial configurations are systematically associated with perceived Big Five personality traits.
In sum, Study 1 provided evidence that subtle positive emotional cues, embedded in the structure of affectively neutral faces, may constitute a valid indicator of extraversion, at least in older adulthood. Across studies, facial appearance predicted self- and peer-reported extraversion above chance, suggesting that some personality information is available in neutral facial cues. However, the authors note that accuracy is modest and limited to certain traits and age groups.
We found the prediction of personality traits from facial features to be unsuccessful, but we discovered that some traits could be inferred from a face to a certain extent. For women we confirmed that inferences could be made about the level of Openness, Striving and Dominance from a face. The identified connections between individual personality traits and Ratings were subtle but significant and mostly in accordance with previous research. Consequently we still see the average Rating score as reliable for assessing trait evaluations from facial features, although the found correlations between personality traits and trait evaluations should be seen as only valid on a group-based level.
In this way, speaking under normal circumstances, the expression of users' emotions is more natural and ecological, and there is a close relationship between facial emotional expression and personality traits. However, we only found the linear relationship between a few face key points and two dimensions of the Big Five (Agreeableness and Openness), this result suggests that faces are related to personality but that the association is limited. Our findings indicate that facial key points contain some information about personality traits, but they cannot fully predict all dimensions of the Big Five.
Studies show that people can infer others’ level of openness, extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, self-esteem, religiosity, competence, and sexual orientation based on their appearance at above-chance levels. Even though significant, the correlations between others’ ratings and self-ratings on these personality traits are small to moderate (~ .14 to .27), limiting the practical usefulness of these ratings. We argue that while people can infer character traits based on facial stimuli with above-chance accuracy, these inferences are not very accurate and may instead reflect prejudice rather than true personality.
