“Geraldine "Gerry" Largay left the Appalachian Trail on July 22, 2013 to use the bathroom, became disoriented, and could not find the trail again.”

The official reconstruction supports this account. Later Maine Warden Service findings, backed by Largay’s journal and unsent texts, indicate she left the trail on July 22, 2013 to relieve herself, became disoriented, and was unable to find the trail again. Conflicting versions mainly come from early search assumptions or weaker retellings.

“During the search for Geraldine "Gerry" Largay after she went missing on the Appalachian Trail in Maine, searchers came within about 100 yards of her campsite but did not find her.”

Multiple credible reports citing Maine wardens state that search teams, including K9 units, came within about 100 yards of Geraldine Largay’s campsite but still did not find her. The main confusion in later retellings involves a different measurement: the campsite’s distance from the trail, not the searchers’ proximity to the campsite.

“Geraldine "Gerry" Largay wrote a journal note dated August 6, 2013, asking that her husband George Largay and daughter Kerry Largay be notified when her body was found.”

The evidence strongly supports this account. Multiple reliable sources report that Geraldine “Gerry” Largay wrote a note dated August 6, 2013 asking that her husband George and daughter Kerry be notified when her body was found. Some reports differ on whether the note was on a torn journal page, notebook page, or book page, but that does not change the substance.

“Geraldine "Gerry" Largay attempted to send text messages to her husband, George Largay, on July 22, 2013 and July 23, 2013, but the messages were not transmitted due to lack of cell service.”

The evidence clearly supports this account. Multiple reputable news outlets, relying on official Maine Warden Service records, reported that Geraldine Largay tried to text her husband on July 22 and July 23, 2013, and the messages did not go through because there was no cell service. The dates and explanation match the documented record.
