“The Walk Free Foundation's Global Slavery Index 2023 lists the six countries with the largest numbers of people in modern slavery as India, China, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, and Indonesia.”
Walk Free’s 2023 data supports the ranking named in the claim. In the report’s global findings, those six countries are the top six by estimated number of people in modern slavery. The only notable caveat is that the report more explicitly presents a top-ten ranking and separately highlights a different six-country G20 grouping.
“In 2021, North Korea had the highest prevalence of modern slavery in the world.”
The best-supported 2021 estimates place North Korea at the top of the world for modern-slavery prevalence. Walk Free’s Global Slavery Index 2023 explicitly uses 2021 as its reference year and ranks North Korea first, and major news coverage accurately reflects that result. The main caveat is that the estimate is model-based because direct data from North Korea are limited.
